Inventory Your Possessions

Cataloguing assets in case of disaster is another service A1 Priorities offers, but if you have the time and inclination it is easy enough to do yourself. It is also something you may be very glad to have in a safe place if you ever need it.

1. Take pictures of the outside and inside of your home. Include vehicles and properties. Open cupboard and closet doors and drawers and get pictures of the contents. Put a ruler in the picture with small items such as jewelry to mark their size. When the pictures are developed, write the date on the backs. Have two sets processed and give them to separate individuals for safekeeping. Update any major purchases at least once a year.

2. Get photocopies made of invoices for anything you've purchased over $200 or for any item of particular importance to you. Store them together in a fireproof box,  a safety deposit box, or offsite with someone you trust.

3. Either buy or borrow an engraver and inscribe your drivers' license number on all electronics, bicycles, and other metal objects, or use your initials and birth date if you don't have a driver's license.

The first time you do this may take the better part of a day to complete. Once it is done though, it won't take very long to update your records when you purchase new valuables.
