Get a map and route out the shortest drive. Write down directions from the old place to the new place. Photo copy the map and directions to hand out to visitors and helpers
If possible, arrange the moving day to be before the end of the month
If you are buying, don't expect to move in the same day the deal closes - remember Murphy's Law!
Realize that moving is hard on everyone's nerves and plan to be relaxed and make sure everyone has fun
Decide whether it would be better for you to hire movers or ask friends and family to help
Make as many decisions as possible before the move as to where everything will go and make sure everyone knows
Make up a checklist to work by. Write down everything that has to be done before, during and after the move.
Have a yard sale before you move; donate or give to friends and family anything you don't use. Why start off fresh with old clutter?
Make arrangements for children and pets to be somewhere out from under foot!
* Start now to use up all those condiments that have been in the fridge for so long. It won't take long in the new house to build up again.
In Town: You'll have to notify these current providers of your impending move:
Insurance - property and auto. You will have to provide details on the size, location and features of the new house. If you end up driving farther to work, be prepared to pay more for auto insurance

Telephone, Hydro, Heat, Cable companies
Delivery Services such as diaper, water, grocery
Maintenance Services such as yard work and housecleaning
Post Office - Fill out change of address for each credit card company; notify magazine subscriptions, driver's license bureau
Garbage/Recycling Day - it's nice to find out the schedule ahead of time
Out of Town: In addition to the In Town changes, you will also have to deal with these . Ask for referrals from your current service/care providers
Doctors - request medical and dental records to take with you
Schools - records will need to be forwarded
Internet Service Providers - consider switching to a web based address in the interim
Cable/SatelliteTelevision
Phone Company - Service/Long Distance
Banks - you'll need new cheques
Say Goodbye to the Old Place
Leave it clean for the new inhabitants
Take the garbage to the curb, or the dump, or take it with you
Leave the garage door opener and spare keys on the kitchen counter
Leave a list of garden plants with their locations and preferences
Call the Welcome Wagon before you go and let them know to pay a visit
Leave a note with garbage pickup day and other helpful information such as reliable babysitters in the neighbourhood
Don't forget to take pictures
