My crock pot (a wedding shower gift 26 years ago) used to sit around collecting dust, except for an occasional beef stew. That one is still going strong, and I have a 2nd one with a removable crock that's even bigger. It really is nice to come home to a ready-to-eat supper -- the house smells soooooo good! It's even better when I have the crock pot AND the bread machine going at the same time. I don't know about you, but to me "convenience foods" are often too heavy on salt and fat, as well as being expensive (though we do indulge occasionally).
There are very few of us anymore who have a lot of free time. The crock pot helps find a few extra minutes to ourselves. I was working two part-time jobs, when we had 2 in college. Now that we only have one in college, I decided to drop my Teacher Assistant job and keep my job as clerk/typist with our county's Real Property Tax Service. I guess you could say I'm "semi-retired", but I still don't have any free time. We have a small farm (20+ beef animals, 30 chickens, 22 guinea fowl, 7 sheep, 3 goats, and 2 rabbits, along with 2 dogs and 6 cats and one very strange rooster). My husband (my best friend, who has a full time job already), makes the hay that feeds most of our menagerie -- it's like he has 2 full-time jobs! We have very little free time to call our own !*!*! But I wouldn't trade this life for anything in the world!
We have two wonderful daughters: the oldest graduated from Syracuse last year, and I'm happy to say that she has a full-time job (whew!). My "baby" is in her 3rd year in the animal science program at Cornell University. (Coping with my "empty nest" has been a lot harder than I thought it would be!)
Happy Crock-Potting!
